The New EcoAction Teams

Dear Friends,

With the new year on the way, what a good time to be out with the old, and in with the new! Of course when we say 'new' we mean in a reuse, recycle, and repair kind of way.

In true EcoAction Teams spirit, one might say that we have reused the best aspects of the former EcoAction Teams calculator and repaired them to be even better. When you check out our new website, you will see that we have made considerable changes to the program. Our calculator now offers enhanced features and varying degrees of involvement, as well as province-specific coefficients for greenhouse gas emissions (www.ecoactionteams.ca ).

Your participation and commitment to small environmental actions in your household will be the gift that keeps on giving. With green news, tips and dozens of eco-action activities, make ecoactionteams.ca your home for household conservation all year-round.

EcoAction for the Holidays

Green Trees

People of all walks of life are starting to understand that conservation is not a trend. Take the lead this holiday season, and give environmentally responsible presents.

Give the Green Bucks
For the selfless person on your list (or the person who has everything), give them a gift card for a Canadian charity from www.canadahelps.org. You choose the amount and the recipient, then they pick between hundreds of charities (including Earth Day Canada). You will receive a tax receipt for your donation.

Your Presence is the Present
Transform this year’s gifts into memorable moments. Make a personalized certificate for time spent together at an outdoor skating rink, theatre, movie or a lunch date.

Good Things Come in Reusable Packages
Show your loved ones you’re cutting out your “waste” line. When wrapping presents, reuse gift bags, ribbons and bows, or the comics section. Another idea is to buy reusable shopping bags to house your present; that way you will be encouraging your loved ones to bring their own bag next time they go shopping. If you like to bake your presents, make sure to keep tins from previous purchases for your goodies. Finally, if you must buy wrapping paper, make sure that it is 100% post-consumer content.

Eco-Wise Hosting
If you have a big group coming over, but not enough plates, bowls or cutlery, ask a friend to bring an extra set. Refuse to use “disposables” that can take more than 100 years to break down.

LED the Way
If you are considering buying new lights, buy LED (Light Emitting Diode) lights as they use about 99% less energy than regular holiday bulbs. If you are sticking with regular lights, use the strands with smaller bulbs because they use less energy and are less of a fire hazard.
