Put Your Waste to Use: Consider a Composting Toilet for Your Refuse

Composting toilets treat human waste by composting and dehydration to produce a useable end-product that is a valuable soil additive for gardening.

Composting toilets eliminate the need for flush toilets, thereby greatly reducing water-use and they also allow for the recycling of valuable plant nutrients by producing a soil-like supplement.

The primary objective of this toilet is to collect and destroy pathogens, reducing the risk of human infection and environmental contamination.

Composting toilets can be used anywhere a flush toilet can be used!

Some composting toilets are eligible for the Canadian Federal Home Renovation Tax Credit. For full details on how to claim your tax credit, see Canadian Federal Home Renovation Tax Credit.

ComposterReduce Your Dog’s Pawprint: Scoop their Poop into a Composter!

Composting dog poop is a simple and inexpensive method for disposing of dog waste that can actually enhance the environment. How? Composting removes raw dog waste from landfills or sewage systems where it can pollute groundwater and streams. Good composting destroys pathogens (bacteria, or micro-organisms that can cause disease) and produces a safe soil amendment.

Dog poop compost is an excellent source of organic matter to add to your garden or potted plants. It helps improve soil structure which contributes to good aeration and moisture-holding capacity. It is also a source of plant nutrients. When used in a potting mix or flower beds, a 25 percent compost blend is recommended.

Don't use it in your vegetable garden, because the compost doesn't heat up enough to kill pathogens such as E. coli., which could contaminate your homegrown produce.

If you have room in your backyard, you can bury an old garbage bin to use as a pet-waste composter (note: far away from your vegetable garden). Or you can purchase a dog poop composter from your local pet supplies store or online. The cost of a dog waste composter will range from $25 to $60.
