Starting greener holiday traditions
Recycle Tag

Although this a wonderful time of the year, it’s also the most wasteful. From excessive spending to throwing out wrapping paper and ribbons and endless amounts of decorations, the holiday season is definitely the most difficult time of the year on the environment.

There are countless things you can do during this holiday that will benefit your health, the environment and your wallet.

Give gifts not garbage
Homemade gifts are more personal, can be less expensive and don't have wasteful packaging. Give a gift basket of homemade goodies, paint a picture or make a wreath made of dried flowers from your garden. When wrapping your gifts, use reusable gift boxes or cloth bags. Cloth bags are a great way to wrap presents since they can later be used as shopping bags!

Give a gift of time, talent or experience
Take someone to a play, concert or restaurant. Make gift certificates for a special dinner, pet sitting or house cleaning. Offer your talents in art, gardening or photography. Sign someone up for lessons in music, a foreign language or a sport.

Planning a Holiday Party?
When planning your holiday party, keep in mind your green party etiquette. Set the mood with beeswax candles and LED lights where necessary. Make sure you clearly mark garbage, recycling, and compost bins so you can effectively manage waste. When it comes to food, purchase local and organic items. When serving, use reusable cups and dishes first. As a backup plan, buy disposable cups and dishes made from 100% recycled cardboard or other products made of corn which are compostable.

Remember, keep holiday plans stress-free and low cost. Start early, stick to a budget and be creative. And most of all, don’t be afraid to start new traditions. Have a great holiday everyone!
