You’ve made it through Thanksgiving, Halloween and Diwali but watch out, the December holidays are coming soon!
Christmas, Hanukkah, Islamic New Year and Kwanza, among other holidays, are celebrated in unique ways but they all have things in common— high stress levels, overeating and busy schedules. The holidays should be a time to relax, have fun and most importantly spend time with your friends and family.
Here are a few suggestions for staying healthy and avoiding the daze of the holidays.
Save on money stressors
One of the biggest stressors during the holidays is overspending, but there are many steps you can take to save money and reduce stress! Try your hand at homemade gifts -- they’re more personal, can be less expensive and don't have wasteful packaging. Re-gifting or making purchases at thrift or antique stores are other options. How about giving to a charity this year instead of gifts? Check out our holiday tool kit for more ideas.
Avoid getting sick
Wash your hands with regular soap, in warm water for 20 seconds on a very regular basis and encourage your family members (or coworkers) to do the same. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when you do not have access to soap and a sink. Avoid antibacterial products as they weaken our immune system and create powerful strains of super germs and bacteria. Plus when they are washed down the drain they enter our waterways which cause environmental health problems for us and other living things.
Stay fit
Continue your exercise routine even during busy times. Try some active winter activities such as taking a hike, skating or cross-country skiing. Check out our suggestions to keep fit during the winter months.
Continue your healthy eating habits
With a busy holiday schedule, it’s hard to find time to eat healthy, nutritious foods. Look for whole, natural foods and avoid prepared and processed items. Keep an eye on fat, sugar and salt content. Search for organic and local produce and humanely raised meat whenever possible
Keep the focus
Don’t worry about planning the perfect party or buying the best gift. Remember what the holiday you’re celebrating is supposed to be about and focus on spending time with those you love in an environmentally responsible way.
